A dark, juicy and spicy wine with notes of black fruit such as black cherry and currant with a little red pepper in the aftertaste. The taste is not too intense, this is because the vineyards are close to the coast.
These special Makulu wines come from a fair trade farm in South Africa. Makulu means “great” in the ancient Zulu language. Big on taste and big on sustainability. The back label contains information about the working methods of this fair trade farm.
In gold, on the front of the bottle is the signature of the winemaker “Theunis van Zijl”. The Van Zijl family are descendants of Dutch farmers who settled here a long time ago.
The region where the Makulu wines come from has influences from both the mountains and the coast. This is a perfect combination for the production of quality wines. The vineyards are located around the slopes of the Hawekwa mountain range. The soil is a mix of sandstone and granite with marl, an ideal terroir.
